Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital is the largest and most advanced tertiary-level Chinese medicine facility in the city. It integrates four key functions: medical treatment, education, scientific research, and public welfare. The hospital serves as a network hospital for the International Emergency Rescue Center (IERC), as designated by the National Health Commission (NHRC). It is recognized as a National Baby-Friendly Hospital (NBFH) and is a National Clinical Trial Institution (NCTI) for drugs. Additionally, it supports the National TCM Epidemic Prevention and Control Team and Base and is one of the pioneering institutions in the National TCM Inheritance and Innovation Project. Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital is responsible for the construction of the National TCM Inheritance and Innovation Center and the National TCM Rehabilitation Center. It has been included in the National TCM Inheritance and Innovation Projects Repository. The hospital is also recognized as one of the first National Standardized Training Bases for both Chinese Medicine Resident Physicians and General Practitioners. Furthermore, it is a National Key Specialized Base for the Standardized Training of Residents in Chinese Medicine General Practice. Currently, it serves as the First Affiliated Hospital and First Clinical College of Chongqing University of Chinese Medicine. The hospital ranks among the top tier in performance assessments of national tertiary-level public Chinese medicine hospitals.
The hospital encompasses the Nanqiaosi Campus located in Jiangbei District and the Daomenkou Campus in Yuzhong District. It offers a total of 2,621 available beds and features 44 clinical departments alongside 10 medical technology departments. In recent years, the hospital has seen annual outpatient visits exceed 3.3 million, with nearly 85,000 patients discharged each year. It includes 5 national key clinical specialties: Dermatology, Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Oncology, Nephrology, and Nursing. Additionally, there are 11 high-level key disciplines and specialties recognized by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including 1 key discipline (TCM Dermatology) and 10 key specialties: Dermatology, Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Oncology, Nephrology, Gynecology, Encephalopathy, Anorectal Surgery, Orthopedics, Hepatology, and Nursing. Furthermore, the hospital boasts 10 National TCM Advantage Specialties, which are Hepatology, Rheumatology, Dermatology, Anorectal Surgery, Geriatrics, Acupuncture & Moxibustion, ICU, TCM Disease Prevention & Healthcare, Clinical Pharmacology, and Nursing. The hospital comprises 1 Key Research Laboratory under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (the Eczema TCM Treatment Research Laboratory), along with 3 Chongqing Key Laboratories: the Key Laboratory of TCM Prevention and Treatment of Autoimmune Diseases, the Key Laboratory of Integrative Medicine Diagnosis and Treatment of Dermatosis, and the Sichuan-Chongqing Joint Key Laboratory of Integrative Medicine Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Diseases. Additionally, there are 2 Secondary Laboratories (the Biochemical Laboratory and the Immune Microbiology Laboratory), as well as 1 National Diagnosis and Authentication Institution (the Cosmetics and Dermatosis Authentication Institution). Moreover, the hospital encompasses 42 Municipal Key Disciplines and Specialties, 12 renowned TCM Departments in Chongqing, and 3 Chongqing Medical Centers specializing in Integrative Medicine. It also includes 17 Chongqing Medical Quality Control Centers, 1 Municipal Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Center, and 4 in-hospital research institutes: the Dermatology Institute, the Acupuncture & Moxibustion Institute, the Ancient Prescription and TCM Pharmaceutics Institute, and the Herbal Medicine Preparation Institute. The hospital operates as the China-Singapore International Cooperation Base for Traditional Chinese Medicine (Chongqing) and the China-Barbados Traditional Chinese Medicine Center. It also hosts a National and Municipal Postdoctoral Research Workstation (with independent recruitment), a TCM Inheritance Postdoctoral Workstation, and serves as the National (Chongqing) TCM Rehabilitation Demonstration Center. Additionally, it is recognized as the National (Chongqing) TCM Processing Technology Inheritance Base, the Chongqing Diagnostic Technology Center with a TCM focus, the Chongqing Academician Expert Workstation, and the Chongqing Clinical Technical Guidance Center for TCM Nursing. The facility includes the Chongqing Clinical Medical Research Center for Dermatology, the Chongqing Research Base for TCM Clinical Studies, the Chongqing TCM Evidence-Based Medicine Center, and the Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Translational Medicine Center. Furthermore, it operates the Chongqing TCM Disease Prevention & Healthcare Center and has established two National Regional TCM Diagnosis and Treatment Centers specializing in Acupuncture & Moxibustion and Dermatology. The hospital is home to the Chongqing Sub-Center of the National Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Literature Retrieval Center and the Sub-Center of the National Acupuncture & Moxibustion Clinical Center. Additionally, it publishes a magazine called "TCM Emergency." The hospital is also affiliated with several organizations, including the Chongqing Association of Chinese Medicine, the Chongqing Association of Integrative Medicine, the Chongqing Association of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, and the Chongqing TCM Industry Association.
The hospital employs over 3,500 staff members, including more than 610 individuals in senior titles. Among its personnel are 2 National Masters of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), 3 nationally recognized TCM doctors, and 2 National Young Qihuang Scholars. The hospital also boasts 12 experts affiliated with the National Famous Old TCM Expert Inheritance Studio, along with 10 specialists who receive special government allowances from the State Council. Additionally, there are 2 Young and Middle-aged Experts recognized for their outstanding contributions in Chongqing, and 33 instructors involved in the "Master-Apprentice Training" program at both national and provincial levels. The hospital includes 3 chief medical experts and 8 experts associated with the municipal-level Famous TCM Expert Inheritance Studio. Furthermore, the staff features 5 Leading Medical Experts from Chongqing, 19 individuals elected as Chongqing Academic and Technical Leaders, 20 as Reserve Candidates, and 42 prestigious municipal TCM doctors. There are also 2 leading experts in the Chongqing Municipal Chief Expert Workshop, 7 teams recognized for their contributions to Chongqing Municipal TCM Innovation, and 9 experts selected as Chongqing Municipal Medical Young Top Talents. The hospital is home to 27 young and middle-aged high-end medical talents in Chongqing, along with 2 studios for training. Moreover, it boasts 6 Chongqing Bayu Qihuang Scholars, 7 Chongqing Bayu Qihuang Youth Scholars, 259 PhD holders, 102 postdoctoral fellows, and 104 supervisors for doctoral and master's degree students.
The hospital is equipped with over 200 large medical devices valued at 840 million yuan. This includes 7 spiral CT machines (with 256 slices), four MRI machines (including 3.0T), 3 X-ray angiography systems, medical linear accelerators, large CNC radiotherapy systems, direct digital radiography systems, breast X-ray imaging systems, and automatic biochemical and immunology analyzers.
The hospital has received over 150 prizes for the National Science and Technology Achievement Award at various levels. It has developed several new national drugs, including Shenmai injection, Dantao mixture, Jiangtang pills, and Gengnian Ningxin capsules. More than 193 types of hospital preparations have obtained CFDA production approval, and the hospital has taken on more than 1,000 research projects at national, provincial, and departmental or bureau levels.
The hospital has received over 100 awards, including prestigious honors such as the National May 1st Labor Medal, the National Advanced Unit for Outstanding Grassroots Party Organization, the National Civilized Unit, and the National Advanced Unit for the Building of Spiritual Civilizations. Additionally, it has been recognized as the National Youth Civilization Unit, the National Advanced Unit of the National Health System, and the National Advanced Unit of Integrative Medicine. Other accolades include being named an Outstanding Collective in National Safe Hospital Work, an Advanced Group for Earthquake Relief by the former Ministry of Health, and a Pioneering Worker by the Federation of Trade Unions. The hospital has also earned the titles of Nationwide Humanities and Care Hospital, Advanced Group for National Emergency Work of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Advanced Unit of Quality Nursing Service in National TCM Hospitals. Other distinctions include the Outstanding Unit for Earthquake Relief Work in Ya'an and Lushan by the former National Health and Family Planning Commission, the Chongqing Public Satisfied Medical Institution, and the Chongqing Outstanding Contribution Unit for the Development of TCM Industry. Furthermore, it has been recognized as the Chongqing Collective Commended Unit for Outstanding Contributions to Foreign Medical Assistance, the Chongqing Pacesetter Unit for Work Ethic Construction, and the Chongqing Garden-style Unit.
